What if you could visit three European countries on one vacation—without changing hotels every few days or renting a car? That’s exactly what makes Amsterdam such an incredible home base for exploring Europe.
Amsterdam is much more than a destination—it’s a gateway. With its excellent train connections, you can wake up in Amsterdam, spend the day exploring another beautiful European city, and return to the comfort of your Amsterdam hotel that evening. No dragging luggage through train stations. No checking in and out of multiple hotels. Just grab your day bag, board the train, and start exploring.
My 5 Amazing Day Trips from Amsterdam itinerary takes you through the Netherlands, Germany, and Belgium, with five completely different experiences along the way. My personal favorite of these is Cologne, Germany. The enormity of the cathedral is breathtaking.
The routine couldn't be easier:
Wake up in Amsterdam → Head to the station → Take the train → Explore → Return to Amsterdam.
Whether you're planning a mother-daughter getaway, girls' trip, couples vacation, or your first European adventure, Amsterdam makes it possible to see much more than one destination without making your vacation feel complicated.
One home base. Three countries. Five incredible adventures.
Day 1 — Utrecht, Netherlands
Take an easy train ride to Utrecht for medieval streets, the Dom Tower, picturesque canals, and the unique waterfront cafés along the Oudegracht. It’s a relaxed way to begin your adventures outside Amsterdam.
Day 2 — Cologne, Germany
Cross the border into Germany to experience magnificent Cologne Cathedral, the Hohenzollern Bridge, the Rhine River, Old Town, and fascinating German history. The train makes it possible to experience an entirely different country and still return to Amsterdam that evening.
Day 3 — Delft & The Hague, Netherlands
Spend the morning exploring Delft's canals, Vermeer history, and famous Delft Blue pottery before continuing by train to The Hague. Visit the Mauritshuis, discover Dutch masterpieces, and enjoy two distinctly different Dutch cities in a single day.
Day 4 — Antwerp, Belgium
Travel into Belgium for a day in Antwerp filled with impressive architecture, historic squares, art, shopping, and plenty of Belgian food. From beautiful Antwerpen-Centraal to Grote Markt, chocolate, waffles, and charming streets, there’s plenty to experience before returning to Amsterdam.
Day 5 — Keukenhof & Dutch Tulip Country
Finish your adventure surrounded by tulips, windmills, flower gardens, and Dutch countryside with a springtime trip to Keukenhof and Lisse. It’s a colorful and relaxing finale after several days of exploring European cities.
